About 10 to 35% of your diet should be protein, so the daily protein amount needed is calculated by determining your daily caloric needs, then dividing by 4 (4 calories per gram of protein) and then multiplying by .225 (22.5% being the approximate percentage of your diet which should be protein).

  1. HELP! Why do I end up with 45% protein when using your numbers? Here, you try it. I’m female, 200 lbs, 66″ tall, 69 yrs old, wish to lose 2 pounds per week.

    • Yes I tried it. It’s a caloric percentage as fat has more calories. and it’s 22.5% not 45% ?

    • Hi Liene. I just tried the calculator and it seems to be working fine. You might have used the wrong units. Make sure you enter your weight in pounds, your height in inches (5’6″ would be 66 inches as an example) and your age 🙂

    • i used your ketosis calculator and got my daily protein limit as 113g. i used this calculator and got 169g….how/why?

      • Hi Elizabeth! The protein calculator will approximate the average calories you should be eating for MAINTENANCE WEIGHT and calculate 22.5% of protein.
        I don’t know what is the calorie amount you entered in the Keto Calculator, but if you picked the maintenance calories and used the same entry data, you should pretty much get the same results. If you entered a lower amount of calories (to lose 2 pounds a week), you’ll also get a lower amount of calories. I would say the Keto calculator is more customizable, you can rely on that.
